From the recent $1 billion funding boost to a landmark 50th anniversary, there’s a lot to celebrate when it comes to WIC—the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. A phase 3 clinical trial is now underway in South Africa to assess the safety and efficacy of the M72/AS01E tuberculosis (TB) vaccine candidate. In 2022, an estimated 10.6M people globally were infected with TB and 1.3M died. If shown to be well-tolerated and effective, M72/AS01E could potentially become the first vaccine to help prevent pulmonary TB in adolescents and adults, the most common form of the disease. This large trial will include up to 60 trial sites across seven countries. A record number of transgender people took the 2022 survey – 92,329 to be exact. That’s over three times the number of respondents of the last survey in 2015. We all have dreams for ourselves and our families, but we don’t all have the same opportunities to make those dreams come true. The convergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial reckoning of 2020 made that clear. For too long, powerful people who make laws and policies have also reinforced inequitable social practices based on race and class. But people intentionally built our current laws and social practices, and together, we can reinvent them. To work towards that vision, we’ve established three ambitious goals we believe we can achieve in our lifetime. * Economic Inclusion for Family Wellbeing: We believe a nation is possible where families have affordable, quality childcare, and where no one must choose between paying for meals or paying their bills. * Equitable and Accountable Public Health and Healthcare Systems: We deserve a healthcare system that provides respectful, high-quality care for everyone and a Public Health system that works together with communities to dismantle structural racism as a root cause of health disparities in America. * Healthy and Equitable Community Conditions: We envision flourishing communities where everyone has access to clean, safe drinking water and safe, stable housing; where jobs pay a living wage; where we have torn down the walls of segregation, and all residents are seen as deserving of respect and dignity. We are so close to banning menthol cigarettes for good in the U.S., and I find it incredibly frustrating that the final step of this process will be delayed until next year for political reasons. Lives are at stake, and those lives are disproportionately Black. Nearly 85% of African American smokers use menthol cigarettes, which are largely responsible for the more than 45,000 Black lives lost annually from tobacco use.    The FDA must follow through on its promise and issue a final rule prohibiting the sale of menthol cigarettes without delay.
