BETHESDA ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT AND THE BERNSTEIN COMPANIES to Honor mural artist September 9, 2019 (Bethesda, MD) – Alicia Cosnahan, the mural artist who recently completed the new mural at 8120 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD will be honored on Tuesday, September 10th at 8:30am. A special dedication will be held at the site of the mural. The third installment of Bethesda’s “Paint the Town,” an initiative to promote public art murals in downtown Bethesda, resulted in a vibrant new sunflower and hummingbird that now welcomes visitors to and enhances the landscape of downtown Bethesda. “Alicia has created a truly remarkable piece of art that brings color and life to this busy corner of Wisconsin Avenue,” said Davin Driskill, Senior Vice President, The Bernstein Companies. “Her mural is a perfect fit for Bethesda’s first lifestyle hotel and we are excited to welcome our guests to experience her artwork and creativity at The Bethesdan Hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.” Embodying the spirit of The Tapestry Collection by Hilton, The Bethesdan Hotel celebrates the influence of the Bethesda community. “We are excited to partner with the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District and celebrate the influence of the community with our hotel.” said Driskill. Alicia “Decoy” Cosnahan, a Washington, D.C. resident, has studied art in Florence, Italy and earned her Bachelor of Arts from Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia. She has participated in many solo and group exhibitions as well as completed numerous murals in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and New Jersey. Cosnahan is also an arts educator in Washington, D.C. and has been leading and working in arts education programs with local youth since 2006. “We are thrilled that a new “Paint the Town” mural has been completed,” said Cathy Bernard, President of the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District, “Because of the partnership and generosity of The Bernstein Companies as well as Alicia’s vision for creative and colorful street art, this part of Wisconsin Avenue is now adorned and beautified with a vivid new mural.” The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District and The Bernstein Companies selected Alicia from a talented pool of regional artists from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia who applied for the opportunity. Alicia and her painting partner, Peter Krysko, began painting on July 3, 2019 and over the course of four weeks working from 10:30pm until 10:00am, transformed the south side of The Bethesdan Hotel into a significant piece of artwork featuring a sunflower, hummingbird and vibrant swaths of color. The mission of the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District, Inc., 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is to create and implement arts and entertainment projects that contribute to the artistic, cultural and economic growth of downtown Bethesda. From award-winning theatre to independent films, downtown Bethesda’s Arts & Entertainment District is filled with inspiring artists and art venues. The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District is the producer of The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards, Bethesda Painting Awards, Bethesda Fine Arts Festival, Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards, Bethesda Film Fest and Play In A Day. Established by Montgomery County in 1994, the Bethesda Urban Partnership, Inc. (BUP) has grown from two full-time staff members to more than 35 employees working in maintenance, marketing, transportation management and administration.
