Caring for the most vulnerable population amidst a global pandemic The Lisa Vogel Agency (LVA) is an in-home care agency providing custodial care to seniors in their own homes. Servicing both Montgomery County and Baltimore County, our number-one priority is providing quality and professional care to help loved ones continue to live comfortably and safely at home. Our caregivers are among the best in the field, and their job became even more essential, as they continued to care for the most vulnerable population, when COVID-19 struck our communities last year. As an agency, we are committed to the health and safety of all employees, clients, and their families, so of course, we were anxiously awaiting the vaccine rollout to begin protecting our caregivers and patients. After we received notice of the first vaccine clinic in our area on January 4, 2021, only 50% of LVA employees chose to get their first dose over the next three days. With the number of requests from patients growing for vaccinated caregivers, our staff sprung into action. Through education, agency-wide messages, sharing office staffs’ own personal experiences with the vaccine, and one-on-one conversations with Lisa Vogel, president of LVA, the number of vaccinated aides grew significantly. As of March 2021, 65% of all LVA employees are fully vaccinated, and that number will grow to 80% as additional caregivers receive their second dose within the month. We still have a small group (6%) of employees who wish to get the vaccine but have not been able to get an appointment. Caregivers who do not wish to receive the vaccine make up 14% of our employees, much lower than the national average, according to a recent survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Washington Post. This report states that just 52% of all frontline health care workers have received at least one dose of the vaccine. We continue to encourage, educate, and support our employees regarding the vaccine and COVID-19. While our agency has not mandated the vaccine for employees, we hope to reach 100% vaccination efforts in the near future. For those caregivers who are not vaccinated, we continue to test for COVID-19 weekly at our office.
