****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***** September 25, 2020 In response to growing food insecurity in Bethesda and surrounding communities, Nourishing Bethesda will officially launch its weekly family food distribution on Friday, September 25, between 1 and 3 pm at the B-CC Rescue Squad. Recipients will receive packages containing three freshly prepared meals and enough food to feed a family of four for five days. Members include St. John’s Norwood Episcopal Church in Bethesda, Nourish Now, the Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce, the Hyatt Regency Bethesda, and the B-CC Rescue Squad. In a trial distribution on Friday, September 11, volunteers provided food to 240 families or 978 people, including 400 children. Nourishing Bethesda has committed to distributing food through the end of February. Montgomery County Council Member Andrew Friedson called the Nourishing Bethesda coalition “an example of what our community is capable of when residents, businesses, faith communities, and nonprofits come together in tough times to support each other and the most vulnerable among us.” See Bethesda Magazine’s recent coverage of Nourishing Bethesda: https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/news/bethesda-food-distribution-overwhelmed-by-areas-need/ Due to the severity of demand, Nourishing Bethesda hopes to increase the number of family food packages to 300 and is seeking donations to fund this initiative. Additional funding has already been received from St. John’s Norwood, RBC Wealth Management, Suburban Hospital, and the Folstad McUmber Charitable Foundation. Nourishing Bethesda is accepting donations, which go directly to purchase food.
